''an ongoing, almost subliminal fashion show,'' she continues. ''Rock stars are always on the cutting edge. They incorporate signals of what's coming.'' Rock inspired fashions ''used to be years in the making,'' adds Liz Rosenberg, a spokesman for Warner Brothers Records. ''Now it's what you saw on TV that afternoon.'' MTV brings these new fashions into 27.8 million American homes. Videotape recorders reach millions more. ''Without fashion, there is no video,'' says Mick Rock, a photographer who made some of the earliest rock videos in the 1970's with David Bowie. ''David's thing was spearheaded by the way he looked. The image hit ahead of everything else.'' That same theory was exploited in the mid 70's by Malcolm McLaren, a London boutique owner, and Vivienne Westwood, a designer, who formed The Sex Pistols as musical models for their styles. Young fashion has never been the same. Now contemporary rock groups have learned from these pioneers. John Taylor, bassist for Duran Duran, recently told In Fashion, a rock influenced fashion magazine, that ''Duran Duran's members were almost picked more for their hair styles than for their musical abilities.'' He added: ''Some people worry about chords. I worry about clothes.'' Mr. Taylor is not alone. Bands that barely break even on concerts have long taken home profits from sales of T shirts and other simple garments. Now rock musicians have become unpaid fashion models, and in at least one case, a rock designer. Claude Attias, a French guitarist, opened a boutique in Rouen to subsidize his music, then discovered how much his designs could earn. His clothes, which he says he created ''as if I was writing a song,'' are sold under the No! and Voyou labels. Madonna and Wham! have recently licensed their names to fashion lines. Rock businessmen are bringing their image mongering expertise to the fashion business as backers of boutiques and clothing lines. Steve Greenberg, a money manager in the music business, was an early backer of Susanne Bartsch's SoHo cloth ray ban sunglasses outlet store ray ban aviator ray ban outlet online cheap ray ban sunglasses ray ban wayfarer ray ban 8301 sale cheap ray ban wayfarer ray ban sunglasses sale ray ban outlet stores cheap ray ban sunglasses discount ray ban sunglasses cheap ray ban wayfarer http://www.rbsunglassesoutlet.biz http://www.rbsaleus.biz
